9.1.13 – Short title

The field Short title is a unique abbreviation assigned to items of secondary literature to enable easy and consistent reference throughout the RISM database.

Enter the short title in accordance with the guidance below. Short titles may only be used once.
Short titles are not needed for serials or collected volumes of essays; for these kinds of publications, the short title is entered in the record for the individual article or chapter.
A short tile only applies to the edition described in the record. Separate records must be created for different editions.
The following will describe how to create short titles for general secondary literature, catalogs of works, and special cases.
General secondary literature
Short titles for general secondary literature are created as follows:
- Last name of the author or editor
Hyphenated or compound last names are written out in full. - First letter of a keyword from the title, capitalized
Usually the name of the composer, otherwise select a different important word - Space
- Year of publication

For the short titles of well-known encyclopedias or sets, use the established abbreviations or terms (MGG, Thieme-Becker, DTÖ, FTA, Stuttgarter Schütz-Ausgabe).
Catalogs of works
Short titles for catalogs of works are created as follows:
- First three letters of the last name of the author or editor
- First letter of the composer’s last name, capitalized
No year is needed.
A catalog that is published as a part of a larger item, such as an appendix in a book, may be entered as a catalog of works.

Special cases
Publications that contain the term “thematic catalog” in their titles are usually catalogs of a composer’s works but may occasionally treat a different area or not be extensive in their scope. If it’s the former, give it a short title as for a catalog of works. If it’s the latter, give it a short title as for general secondary literature. In short, anything that is not a catalog of a composer’s works is assigned short title as for general secondary literature.

This field is also used to define the method for citing a thematic catalog or catalog of works. This ensures that the catalog cited in a uniform way throughout the database.
